What is Heavy Rock ?

Welcome to the blog. As a life-long headbanger who has collected hard n heavy music since 1974, I have heard (and seen) the incredible evolution of music throughout 6 decades. Back in the day, bands like Zeppelin, Sabbath, Purple, and others were labeled as heavy metal, but if you were to ask any young , aspiring metalhead today, they would probably scoff at the idea, preferring much heavier and hardcore bands that inhabit the death-metal and extreme genres typically fawned over nowadays.

Loud and heavier music was known as Heavy Rock in the old days.....I tend to lump all of these bands under this label, because the important thing isn't necessarily how distorted or fast a band is, but how the music makes you feel. The spirit that bands like Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep embodied is the same for bands today.

So how do you describe Heavy Rock? Typically, the sound features overdriven guitars or keyboards, backed by an energetic and powerful rhythm section. And it is always played LOUD. The subject matter can range from the mystical to "drinking with the boys"......and everything in between. Bands like Opeth, Slayer, and Voivod fit right next to Iron Maiden, UFO, and Priest.  We will also feature bands on the fringe, like Grand Funk, Cream, Queen, and others. It's definitely a different feeling when you compare the genre to pop, country, or folk, although many heavy bands feature snippets of these other genres. Many of our featured bands can also be labeled as progressive or folksy (Rush, Jethro Tull, or even Heart).

You will know it when you hear it.........

The title "Mining For Heavy Rock" was penned by my good friend, Kevin Brown, many years ago when we were working on a mutual project. We attempted to pull out forgotten gems of this powerful music that we shared an obsession for. And the term stuck......

So welcome to the blog. I hope you enjoy our mutual quest for the best "gems." Rock on !
